What the answer means
A percentile is the only honest way to answer “is this cheap”. Saying a fare is 40% off requires a number to be 40% off of, and every site that says it is quoting either the airline’s own inflated fare or an average across dates nobody would fly.
So we rank instead. The 20th percentile means that on 20 of the last 90 days you could have paid less. That statement is checkable against the chart, it does not depend on a distribution assumption, and it means the same thing on a route that swings wildly and one that never moves.
Our alert bar sits at 40% under a route’s own median. Some routes clear it several times a quarter. Some never clear it at all — and on those, the useful product decision is to say nothing.
